May 1 - Disney-MGM Studios opens at Walt Disney World Resort. The park's third theme park (after the Magic Kingdom and Epcot), the park focuses on a showbusiness theme. The Great Movie Ride and the Studio Backlot Tour are two of the park's most popular opening-day attractions.
June 1 - Disney's Typhoon Lagoon opens at Walt Disney World Resort. It is the second Disney water park, following after River Country.
July 12 - Star Tours opens in Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland.
December 15 - Star Tours (closed 2010) opens in the Backlot at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
The first Splash Mountain opens at Disneyland Park on July 17, 1989, to coincide with the park's 34th anniversary.
