History[]
Biography[]
The intersection between the continuity of the Pirates of the Caribbean films and Pirates of the Caribbean attractions are unknown. This article is dedicated to Barbossa's history in the attractions.
Origins[]
Captain Hector Barbossa was a pirate captain of the 18th century Caribbean who recruited out of Tortuga to serve as first-mate to Captain Jack Sparrow aboard The Black Pearl. Barbossa lead a mutiny against Jack and became captain of the Black Pearl. During this time, he took the crew to Isla de Muerta to take its treasure, only to be cursed by it and for them all to be left undead and unfeeling until all of its medallions and blood of its robbers would be returned to the chest. This was complicated by Barbossa having ordered Jack's loyalist Bootstrap Bill Turner be strapped to a cannon and thrown overboard in retaliation for Bootstrap having sent his medallion to his son, William.
Obtaining a special block of wood which was one of the nine pieces of eight handed down by the Brethren Court, Barbossa became the court's Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea. Barbossa left this wood in the possession of his crew-mate Ragetti, who carved it into a wooden eye. Barbossa also acquired a pet monkey whom he and the crew mockingly named, "Jack", and who became cursed as-well.
Curse of the Black Pearl[]
- “Look! The moonlight shows us for what we really are. We are not among the living, and so we cannot die. But neither are we dead. For too long I've been parched of thirst and unable to quench it.
For too long I've been parched of thirst and unable to quench it. Too long I've been starving to death and haven't died. I feel nothing. Not the wind on my face nor the spray of the sea. Nor the warmth of a woman's flesh. You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner... you're in one” - ―Barbossa
Around 1721, Barbossa found the medallion in possession of Elizabeth Swann in Port Royal, who was assuming the fake name of Elizabeth Turner. Barbossa believed her to be Bootstrap Bill's offspring and ergo in possession of the blood he needed, only for this to not work and for her to be saved by Will. Will was assisted by Jack who was plotting to reclaim the Pearl, before Barbossa captured Jack along with Will and Elizabeth.
After negotiating with Will, Barbossa marooned Jack and Elizabeth on the same island where he marooned Jack a decade before. Before he could kill Will, Jack returned once more and told him that he and Elizabeth had arranged for the British navy to ambush Barbossa outside of the island. Jack and Barbossa made peace with the two sending out Barbossa's cursed men to kill the navy, only for Jack to betray Barbossa and use Will's hand-blood to end the curse, before shooting Barbossa in the heart, killing him.
War on Piracy[]
After Barbossa's death, the Isla de Muerta was sunken into the sea. Barbossa's corpse came into possession of Tia Dalma, the human form of sea goddess Calypso. Barbossa proceeded to resurrect Barbossa, and reunite him with the monkey Jack.
Barbossa's Bounty[]
After the War on Piracy, Barbossa came into ownership of a tavern on the isle of Treasure Cove which he called, "Barbossa's Bounty".
Treasures of the Seven Seas[]
At some point, Sparrow and Barbossa competed to steal the goddess Calypso's Treasure of the Pacific from a tribe of, "Headhunters". At some point, Barbossa also became apparent proprietor of a restaurant in the pirate haven of Treasure Cove.
Sacking Isla Tesoro[]
Barbossa was known to be captain of a Spanish pirate-ship called The Wicked Wench and at some point, lead the ship to attack the isle of Isla Tesoro in search of its cursed treasure. The crew however was engaged in a race with Captain Jack for ownership of the treasure. The Wicked Wench was successful in ransacking the isle and burning it to the ground and while Jack got to the treasure first, Barbossa's crew was seemingly able to take it from him.
Following this event, the crew of the Wicked Wench created a base on the island, storing their treasure within the caves of Dead Man's Cove. Barbossa seemingly lost his position as captain to another pirate, before all of the pirates were left cursed by the stolen gold and rendered as undead skeletons. Barbossa could be seen wandering the Ghostly Grotto of Isla Tesoro, shifting between a mortal and skeleton form. He notably appeared upon a beached ship, nearby the undead skeleton of a helmsman.
Development history[]
Captain Barbossa was inspired by Blackbeard in the original Pirates of the Caribbean ride, while also mimicking skeletal members of the Wicked Wench's crew and quoting Captain X. In 2006, he replaced Blackbeard in the American Pirates of the Caribbean attractions as captain of the Wicked Wench, the ship which inspired his vessel the Black Pearl from the films.
