This article is on the character from Pirates of the Caribbean. For the character from Walt Disneys' Enchanted Tiki Room, see Juan the Barker Bird.

The Barker Bird later known as Rummy is a character from Pirates of the Caribbean.

History[]

Background[]

This parrot was connected to the golden age of piracy, and had a missing right-leg replaced with a peg-leg, had an exposed chest with an anchor tattoo, and wore pirate items such as a pirate hat and eye-patch (potentially hiding a missing eye). It was known to be active in the ruined Castillo del Morro fortress on the island of Isla Tesoro, after it was ransacked by pirates and said pirates were killed by a curse.

Development history[]

The Barker Bird was made to emulate Juan the Barker Bird, an animatronic installed outside of Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room to communicate the content of animatronic based attractions to guests. The barker bird was designed by Marc Davis and written by X. Atencio while voiced by Gary Goddard, a Disney Imagineer who left the company following multiple accusations of sexual assault.

The Barker Bird was removed in 2006 as part of a refurbishment tying into the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. The animatronic was moved to World of Disney in Downtown Disney where he had worse maintenance.

In 2023, concept art for a Pirates of the Caribbean themed dining-service for the Magic Kingdom was released, featuring the Barker Bird. This version of the character was named Rummy and made parrot companion of the rum-runner Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn.

Appearances[]

The Beak and Barrel[]

Pirates of the Caribbean[]

The Barker Bird used to appear outside of the entrance to the attraction, singing "Yo Ho, A Parrot's Life For Me" and repeating lines from the attraction.

World of Disney[]

The bird appeared in this store. He referred to himself as, "Patch" in this store.

Trivia[]

  • A similar green pirate macaw with a peg-leg for a right leg appeared as a sculpture in Disneyland Paris' Adventureland for Disney Magical Moments.[1]
  • The parrot bares a resemblance to the Dirty Foot Pirate's macaw, which is green and has an anchor tattoo on its chest.
  • One of the lines which he repeated in Downtown Disney was, "Remember the golden rule. Take what you can, give nothing back", referencing a motto between Captain Jack Sparrow and Mister Gibbs in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
