History[]
Background[]
Origins[]
Placid Palms was a calm and peaceful beach resort, as well as the base of operations for the Tropical Amity Fruit Exporters company. Placid Palms has been present since the December of 1938 at the latest, and in 1938 was scheduled to have Jungle Navigation Company member Colonel Brody travel there for a shift from the company's east-dock in the Amazon rainforest (though he looked to see if someone could take his shift).
Prior to the hurricane which hit the bay, Captain Mary Oceaneer of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers was searching for treasure in the bay on her ship, the M.S. Salty IV along with her parrot, Duncan. At the same time, a shrimping boat called the M.S. Tilly was in the bay where it transported and/or met with the ancient traveller, Trader Sam. Sam may have served them a, "Dark & Stormy" beverage around the time of the hurricane.
Around the 1950s, a large hurricane hit Blustery Bay and changed the land layout of Placid Palms.[2] The Miss Tilly was wrecked atop Mount Mayday, though its crew (or at least members of it) survived. Captain Mary Oceaneer's ship was also wrecked in the bay with much of her nautical equipment, treasures and artifacts getting scattered across the bay.
Typhoon Lagoon[]
Placid Palms was changed into, "Typhoon Lagoon" after the hurricane. Many buildings rebuilt themselves with scrap which was strewn about in the storm. The crew of the Miss Tilly sent a post-card to Trader Sam via the Jungle Navigation Company, asking him what had happened. Meanwhile, Captain Oceaneer turned her wrecked ship into a base of operations for recovering her lost artifacts. The Tropical Amity Fruit Exporters Produce Wash Facility was repurposed into a water-slide, using rafts designed for the company's produce.
Lagoona Gator came to be the mascot of Typhoon Lagoon. Lagoona is a member of a band called the Beach Gators where he provides lead-vocals and works alongside fellow alligators Scarf, Wipeout and Knarly. Songs performed by the Beach Gators include: Two Girls for Every Gator, The Little Old Gator from Pasadena, Gator Vibrations, and Little Surfer Gator, the latter of which is supposedly a favourite.[3]. At some point, Lagoona Gator was on the front-page of the magazine Surfin' Reptile where he was focus on the cover story, "Lagoona Gator Shoots the Curl on the Biggest Wave in Florida history".[4]
Lagoona had a starring role in the beach movie "Bikini Beach Blanket Muscle Party Bingo" as the character Freddie. This movie was shot on location in Typhoon Lagoon and had music provided by the Beach Gators, made available for purchase by Swampywood Records.[5] The movie also had the actors: Annette Crocochello, Bobcat Shaw, Cathy Cayman, Sandra Deer and Troy Greeno'hue while being directed by Croc Buzoo, written by Cayman Lafferty, and produced by Ron Scaly.
Around the 2000s, Typhoon Lagoon appeared to have been visited by surfers Lilo Pelekai and her alien pet, Stitch. Santa Claus also visited Shark Reef for snorkelling during vacation at his summer retreat in Blizzard Beach.
Development history[]
Blizzard Beach was originally planned to have a shared backstory with the defunct Pleasure Island area of Downtown Disney. In the backstory, Hurricane Connie. the same hurricane which caused Pleasure Island to be lost in 1955 would have been responsible for sweeping across Typhoon Lagoon.
