Br'er Raccoon is a character from Splash Mountain.

History[]

Background[]

Br'er Raccoon was a raccoon living in Chick-a-Pin Hill during the 19th century. When Br'er Rabbit decided to leave home and got involved with Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear, Br'er Raccoon would play harmonica to accompany Porky Pine singing about the event. When Br'er Rabbit returned home, Br'er Raccoon and Porky Pine were amongst those to welcome the rabbit.

Development history[]

This animatronic character was designed by Marc Davis for the attraction America Sings in its "Going South" sequence. The raccoon's audio-animatronic was amongst the many moved to Splash Mountain.

In Splash Mountain, the character represented Br'er Raccoon, a counterpart to Br'er Coon from the various "Uncle Remus" stories based on 19th century African-American folklore. Br'er Coon appeared in the stories "Why Mr. Possum Loves Peace", "Brother Rabbit Takes Some Exercise", "Crazy Sue's Story", "Brother Rabbit & the Gingercakes", and "Brer Rabbit Treats the Creeturs to a Race". Br'er Raccoon actually made minor background appearances in The Song of the South (1946), the infamously racist film based on the Uncle Remus stories of which Splash Mountain is based.
