Calypso is a sea deity from Greek mythology who appears as Tia Dalma in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. She was originally portrayed by Naomie Harris.
History[]
Background[]
Calypso was the goddess of the seas. She seduced the mortal sailor Davy Jones, and made him the immortal captain of the ghost ship The Flying Dutchman. Jones was bound the the Dutchman and unable to step foot on solid land all but for one day every ten years which he and Calypso planned to spend together. However, when that day came, Calypso was absent and caused Davy Jones' heart to be broken. In his wrath, Jones sought the pirate syndicate the Brethren Court how to imprison Calypso within the human mortal form of, "Tia Dalma" so that they could rule the seas in her place.
