Captain Edward Teague is a character from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007). He is the illegitimate pirate father of Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirate Lord of Madagascar, and keeper of the Brethren Court's Code. He was portrayed by Rock legend Keith Richards.

History[]

Background[]

Captain Edward Teague was a pirate captain during the late 17th-early 18th century, with his flagship being The Troubadour. Teague was a high-ranking member of the Brethren Court, an international guild of pirates, for whom he was the Pirate Lord of Madagascar and Keeper of the Pirate's Code. Despite being Pirate Lord of Madagascar, he rarely left the Brethren's headquarters of Shipwreck Cove off the coast of South America where he was known for his strict adherence to the code, and excellent musical abilities.

At some point, Teague had an affair with a woman of unknown identity with whom he had a bastard son named Jack Sparrow. Jack was raised in Shipwreck Cove as Teague's indentured servant before he ran away to go on adventures with Arabella Smith. Jack's mother died in his absence and under unknown circumstances, her head was shrunken and left in Teague's possession. Seeking freedom, Jack would go on to become a merchant for the East India Trading Company, before being branded a pirate by them leading him to becoming pirate captain of the Black Pearl, and the Brethren Court's Pirate Lord of the Caribbean.

Teague reunited with Jack at Shipwreck Cove during the Brethren assembly which determined Elizabeth Swann as Pirate King who lead the court to war with the East India Trading Company. After this reuniting, Teague revealed the death of Jack's mother to Jack and left him her shrunken-head. It was this assembly of the Court which also freed the bound goddess Calypso and defeated Davy Jones, with the latter being replaced by Swann's husband Will Turner.

Development history[]

PirateCaptainRide

Captain Teague first appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, with a design modelled after the original Captain of The Wicked Wench (Blackbeard) from the original Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Teague's name is seemingly based on Blackbeard's real name Captain Edward Teach, and he was portrayed by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones who influenced Johnny Depp's performance as Captain Jack Sparrow. In addition to this, Teague was made the master of the Prison Dog who in addition to appearing throughout the original film trilogy, originates from the Disneyland attraction.

Appearances[]

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure[]

Teague's skeleton appears with the skeleton of other Brethren Court members in the Caves of Misfortune; namely those of Capitaine Chevalle, Ammand the Corsair, and Eduardo Villanueva.[1]

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

While Teague is not directly referenced in the bar, the shrunken-head of Jack's mother appears in Trader Sam's possession.
