The Genie of the Lamp, more commonly referred to as Genie is a character from Aladdin who makes appearances in many of the Disney theme parks.

History[]

Background[]

Origins[]

The Genie of the Lamp is a djinn of unknown origins with a comedic personality, habit of referencing future pop-culture, and phenomenal cosmic powers. He was bound within an oil lamp, which when rubbed would have Genie grant its holder three wishes, though he cannot kill anyone, make anyone fall in-love, or bring back the dead.

The Genie's primary desire was to become freed from servitude and the lamp. The Genie had some familiarity with the Magic Carpet, and his lamp would become hidden away in the Cave of Wonders in the desert outside of Agrabah.

Aladdin[]

Ten thousand years after his last master, the Genie was freed by a thief named Aladdin, manipulated into reaching it by the Royal vizier, Jafar who then left the boy to die, not realizing he still had the lamp. Without wishing for it, Aladdin deceived the Genie into helping them all escape the cave of wonders before they reached an oasis. Here, Aladdin learned of the Genie's desire to be free and promised to use his third wish to release him.

Due to being in-love with Princess Jasmine, Aladdin wished for the Genie to make him into a prince. Genie then brought Aladdin to Agrabah while presenting him as "Prince Ali of Ababwa" to court Princess Jasmine. When Jafar attempted to murder Aladdin by drowning, Aladdin had to use his second wish for the Genie to save him. Genie expected to be then freed by the final wish, only for Aladdin to be unsure as the stakes of his lie were rising causing the Genie to become angered with Aladdin.

While Genie was upset, his lamp was stolen by Jafar's pet parrot Iago. Jafar then used his first two wishes to force the Genie to make him the sultan of Agrabah, and to turn him into the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Jafar exposed Aladdin's lies and sent him to the ends of the earth while forcing the Sultan to become his court jester and Jasmine to be his slave. Aladdin returned, with Genie assisting him sneak into the throne-room and try to reclaim the lamp, only to be spotted by Jafar,

Jafar and Aladdin then fought, with Aladdin then tricking Jafar into using his final wish to become a Genie. However, this caused Jafar to be trapped within a lamp himself, alongside Iago, then be thrown into the Cave of Wonder by Genie. After this, Aladdin used his final wish to free the Genie who then decided to travel the world.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom[]

Later history[]

At one point, the Genie created multiple magic flying carpets for Aladdin and Jasmine who shared them with guests to ride.

Around the 18th/19th centuries, the Genie's Lamp came into the possession of the seagull Scuttle while living in the grottos near Ariel's castle.

By around the 1950s, Genie's lamp seemingly came into the possession of "Trader Sam" who kept it in his Enchanted Tiki Bar in Polynesia.

Genie performed the solo blues music show "Genie Sings the Blues" in the Fantasyland Concert Hall.
