History[]
Background[]
Origins[]
This was a monstrous Giant Squid alive during the 19th century. The animal was known to inhabit Kraken Reef, a graveyard of lost ships off the coast of the island Vulcania.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea[]
The Giant Squid attacked Captain Nemo's victorian submarine the Nautilus, sinking it and its captain. The Squid was killed by harpooner Ned Land by driving a harpoon into the creature.
Later history[]
Through unknown circumstances, at least one tentacle of the Giant Squid entered the possession of mystic mixologist "Trader Sam", who was a friend of Ned Land and visitor of Vulcania. Trader Sam mounted the tentacle in his Polynesian island "Tiki Bars" where through enchantments, the tentacle would sometimes come to life to assist Sam and his skippers in mixing drinks.

A tentacle belonging to the squid appears jutting out from the wall in both Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar and Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. When the drink The Nautilus is ordered, this arm comes to life and lowers to pour alcohol into the drink. In Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, there is a photograph of Walt Disney holding the squid's tentacle.
Trivia[]
- The Giant Squid in the film was designed by Bob Mattey, who also designed various machines and figures for the Disney Parks.
- It was once planned for the Squid to appear in a part of the Jungle Cruise. This was decided against for various technical issues including the wires which maneuvered the tentacles being difficult to hide.
- Ursula is a giant tentacled monster who appears in Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, which replaced the Magic Kingdom's Submarine Voyage.
