Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) is a historic French science-fiction author. Along with H.G. Wells, Verne has sometimes been named, "The Father of Science Fiction" (though the literary genera was actually created by woman author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley a decade prior to Jules Verne's birth in her classic novel, Frankenstein).

Various works of his have been adapted in the parks, notably through the Submarine Voyage attractions, the Mysterious Island, Tomorrowland, Discoveryland and various works based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Verne has also appeared as a character in many attractions, including The Timekeeper where he was portrayed by Michel Piccoli.

History[]

Background[]

Origins[]

Jules Verne was a historic French author of science-fiction stories. Unlike in real-life, some of his stories seemed to be based in the reality of his world such as Vingt mille lieues sous les mers being inspired by the adventures of Captain Nemo and the Nautilus, or De la Terre à la Lune, trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes being inspired by the Columbian cannon of Colonel Impey Barbicane and the Baltimore Gun Club. Verne (or a relative) also may have written an additional story titled, "800 Leagues on the Amazon".

The Timekeeper[]

In the year 1900, Jules Verne attended the Expo Universelle de Paris outside of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Here, he briefly encountered fellow science-fiction author H.G. Wells who was developing ideas for a flying time-machine. After dismissing the idea of time travel, Verne became harassed by the flying time-travelling robot 9-Eye who was spying on them for her employer the Timekeeper in the future.

Verne attempted to latch onto 9-Eye to learn more, and found himself transported throughout human history with her. Due to Verne having been an idol of the Timekeeper, he decided to show Verne views of the future of technology and how his stories influenced some of it. After this, Verne was returned to the expo where he reunited with H.G. Wells and decided to collaborate on the time machine with him.

Later history[]

Jules Verne and Wells were able to develop the time-machine into a vehicle called the, "Reinastella", which they flew to the year 2189 to attend the 300th expo. Here, the two were briefly reencountered by 9-Eye and the Timekeeper, though for them it had only been a few minutes since first meeting Verne.

Jules Verne also may have had some connection the the futurist settlement of Discoveryland in Paris. He was seen in orbit, using a steampunk space-suit to observe the stars, likely due to the technology of the Baltimore Gun Club who ran a space transit system from Discoveryland. Verne presumably died in the year 1905.

Appearances[]

Adventureland Treehouse[]

Verne's 1867/1868 book "In Search of the Castaways" appears in the treehouse's kitchen area. This book inspired a 1962 Disney adventure film.

Horizons[]

Jules Verne physically appeared in this attraction, floating within his giant-bullet inspired spacecraft from his 1865 story De la Terre à la Lune, trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes.

Iron Man Experience[]

Howard Stark was in possession of From Earth to the Moon.[1]

Main Street, U.S.A.[]

The Timekeeper's depiction of Jules Verne appears to be on a mural promoting the U.S. Steamship Company in Disneyland Paris, where he is talking with H.G. Wells.

Skipper Canteen[]

A fictional book titled 800 Leagues on the Amazon by "Verne" appears in the library, as a reference to the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.[2] There is also a book by Captain Nemo in the library, along with a map by Captain Mary Oceaneer which depicts the Nautilus being attacked by a Giant Squid.

Space Mountain[]

Space Mountain (Disneyland Paris)[]

This version of the attraction was inspired by Vernes' story, De la Terre à la Lune, trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes. Jules Verne himself appeared on the attraction, floating in space within a steampunk space-suit while observing outer-space with a telescope.

Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom)[]

In the queue, a screen mentions an active lunar space-station named "Verne Settlement Two-Eight".[3]

The Timekeeper[]

Jules Verne was a major character in this attraction; first referenced as an inspiration for the Timekeeper.

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

Trader Sam is shown to be in possession of a copy of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. There are also various references in both Trader Sam's bars to characters and locations from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with Sam having been a friend of Ned Land, travelled to Vulcania, and has the tentacle of the Giant Squid mounted on his wall.
