Triton is the son of Poseidon in Greek mythology. In The Little Mermaid (1989), he was reimagined as King Triton.
History[]
Background[]
Origins[]
King Triton is presumably the son of the Greek god of the seas, Poseidon. By the 18th/19th century, Triton was king of the ocean and mer-people, ruling using a magical trident similar to (if not that of) his father. Triton had seven daughters who performed musically for him: Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, Andrina and Ariel. At some point, Triton was involved in the banishment of the sea-witch Ursula (who may have been his sister). Triton also had a hatred of humans and forbid mer-folk from making contact with them.
