Marc Davis often referred to as "The King of Animation" was a "Disney Legend", animator, concept-artist and early Imagineer of the Disney Parks. His wife, Alice Davis, was also an early Disney Imagineer.

Marc Davis designed characters and other elements for many of the Disney Parks' most classic attractions including: Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland (which had elements incorporated into Big Thunder Mountain Railroad), the Ford Magic Skyway, Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, America Sings (which had elements incorporated into Splash Mountain), Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, the Country Bear Jamboree, Ford's Magic Skyway, It's a Small World, Submarine Voyage and the Jungle Cruise. Additionally, Marc Davis developed unbuilt attractions for the parks such as the Western River Expedition, the Adventure House, and the Enchanted Snow Palace.

Davis also designed and animated classic Disney film characters including Princess Aurora & Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty, Tinker Bell in Peter Pan, Alice in Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, Thumper and Flower in Bambi, Cinderella in Cinderella, Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox & Br'er Bear in the Song of the South, and Cruella De Vil in One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Tributes[]

  • Buena Vista Street: Outside of Atwater Ink & Paint is a sign for the Atwater School of Art & Animation tributing Walt's "Nine Old Men" animators, including Davis.
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: In the queue for the Magic Kingdom's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, there is a fusing cage with multiple names tributing different Disney Imagineers. One of these is "Matchstick Marc", a tribute to Marc Davis.
  • Haunted Mansion: The tombstone patriarch of the (Gracey) family is for one "Grandpa Marc". The epitaph reads "In memory of our patriarch dear departed Grandpa Marc" with a carving depicting a Weeping Willow tree.
  • Jungle Cruise: In the queue for Walt Disney World's Jungle Cruise, there is a souvenir flag from Bakersfield, California due to this having been Marc Davis' place of birth. In the queue for Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions, there is a message from a couple named Alice and Davis, tributing Marc Davis and his wife Alice Davis.

    The Davis' window tributes on Main Street, U.S.A.

    Main Street, U.S.A.: Marc Davis has a Main Street window, identifying him as selling "Exotic Arts" at "Far East Imports". The window is next to that tributing his wife, Alice Davis.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The crest over the treasure room says "Marci Daviso".
  • Skipper Canteen: The head of animal studies for the Jungle Navigation Company is identified on the door as being "Skipper Marc".
  • Thunder Mesa Daily Messenger: An advertisement for Davis Coats tributes Marc Davis and Claude Coats who both worked on the Haunted Mansion, of which Phantom Manor is inspired by.
  • World of Disney: In Disney Springs, one of the counters is themed to having been Davis' animation table with etchings of his various characters in it.

Trivia[]

  • Davis is credited for many of the more comedic aspects of the Haunted Mansion, while artists like Ken Andersen and Claude Coats were responsible for the more scary elements.
  • The last time Marc Davis saw Walt Disney before Disney's death was when Davis was designing characters for the Country Bear Jamboree.
  • Davis having designed characters for both America Sings and The Song of the South is one of the reasons why Splash Mountain was created after America Sings became defunct.
