Maurice is a character from Beauty and the Beast.
History[]
Background[]
Origins[]
Maurice was an inventor in 18th century France. Maurice had a daughter named Belle with a wife who died. Belle and Maurice lived in a cottage in a small French village where they were deemed strange, crazy, and generally ostracized by the townsfolk.
Beauty & the Beast[]
When Maurice went out to show off his wood-chopping machine at an invention competition, he got lost in the woods and was harboured by servants in the castle of the Beast. When Beast thought that Maurice was intruding, he took him prisoner causing Belle to go and take his place. Maurice returned to the village and attempted to get Gaston's help in saving Belle, only for the townsfolk to discount Maurice's experiences as the ravings of a madman.
Seeing an opportunity to blackmail Belle into marrying him, Gaston bribed asylum Monsieur d'Arque into having Maurice institutionalized unless Belle, now in love with the Beast, married Gaston. When Gaston successfully lured Belle away, she still refused to marry him and showed the villagers that the Beast was real. This caused Gaston to lock Belle up with her father and lead an angry mob to storm the Beast's castle and kill the Beast. Belle and Maurice were saved by Chip who used the chopping machine to break them out and return to the castle.
Belle and the Beast were able to defeat Gaston, and the Beast's curse was lifted causing him to turn into a Prince. Belle and Beast got married with Maurice staying in their lives.
Later history[]
Maurice seemingly kept living in his cottage and constructed a large music-box of Belle and Beast dancing as a gift for the couple. He also created an, "Amazing Popping Machine" which created popped corn. He would also invent a food-stand called, "Maurice's Treats" which was popular for travelling from village to village, and won three ribbons.
