The Mermaids are characters from extinct attraction, Submarine Voyage.

Description[]

It is not fully known if these creatures actually exist or if they were simply the result of underwater hallucinations, and if it truly exists how much of its appearance was affected by the aforementioned hallucinations. They appear to be beautiful women with the upper halves of humans and the lower bodies of fish. They were known to inhabit the Submarine Lagoon of Tomorrowland, and ruins believed to have been part of the lost nation of Atlantis. They may have leashed a large sea serpent as a kind of pet or guardian.

History[]

Background[]

Development history[]

The mermaids appeared in the original Submarine Voyage attraction.

In 1985, female cast-members played mermaids in the waters of Submarine Lagoon. This was shut down for various reasons including: male guests jumping in the lagoon or throwing money at them, chlorine being used in the ride's water which bleached the women's hair, and the submarines using real turbines which could cause harm to people in the water.

Appearances[]

Main Street Cinema[]

The Disneyland Casting Agency has the posting, "Are you a Mermaid? Mermaids needed for exotic location shoot. Swimming ability suggested. Must provide own sunscreen".

Submarine Voyage[]

These creatures appeared in the original Submarine Voyage, both in the attraction and formerly as live-performed characters in the water. They also appeared on the poster for the classic attraction.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Submarine Voyage[]

Various mermaid figures appeared under the water.

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage[]

At the end of the adventure, the captain of the ship will exclaim, "We better get out of here before we see a sea serpent or mermaid" as the submarines pass by rock formations resembling both.

Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port[]

The mermaids had a small cameo on the poster for Submarine Voyage.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Trader Sam's bars which have theming and references to the Submarine Voyage attractions also contain mermaid artwork.
