Nipper the Robot Dog is a character in Space Mountain.

History[]

Background[]

This entity was a robotic dog who potentially belonged to another, humanoid robot. The dog was also featured in a simply within Starport Seven-Five promoting tourism to "The Crater Caverns".

Development history[]

His Masters Voice

In real world history, "Nipper" was a dog who was subject of Francis Barraud's painting "His Master's Voice" (1888). This painting showed a dog listening to his master's voice over a gramophone. RCA Records used this art piece as their logo.

RCA Records sponsored Space Mountain in 1975. As part of this sponsorship, a figure of Nipper inside of a flying saucer appeared near the attraction's entrance with the gramophone playing "Here's to the Future". When FedEx took over as sponsors in 1994, Nipper was removed from the entrance and fashioned into a robotic dog figure by the exit-ramp, appearing to be a robot's pet. Nipper was relocated again in 2009 as part of the tourism display.[2]

For the 50th anniversary of Space Mountain in 2025, movement was restored to the Nipper figure.
