Sir Henry Morgan (c. 1635- 1688) is a historic privateer, buccaneer, and governor of Jamaica. He is affiliated with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
History[]
Background[]
Henry Morgan was a welsh Buccaneer whose buccaneering lead to him becoming a privateer for the British, receiving a knighthood and title of Governor of Jamaica. He was known for being a member of the Brethren Court where he (and another pirate named Bartholomew) created the Pirate's Code. Morgan may have faked his death on August 25, 1688 and became the reclusive, "Shadow Lord" who studied alchemy in an effort to extend his life.
Development history[]
Sir Henry Morgan was once intended to be one of the historic pirates/privateers featured in the wax museum attraction which evolved into Pirates of the Caribbean. X. Atencio's scripts for the attraction once included a parrot saying, "Morgan says the streets are paved with gold". Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and the resulting Pirates of the Caribbean franchise introduced an alternate-history Sir Henry Morgan who wrote the Pirate's Code, likely inspired by Sir Henry Morgan's historic connection to the Brethren of the Coast which inspired the film's Brethren Court.
Appearances[]
Barbossa's Bounty[]
There is a framed and painted illustration of Sir Henry Morgan, hanging in Barbossa's tavern.
Trivia[]
- Major Pirates of the Caribbean character Elizabeth Swann was daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann, who took over governing Port Royal by the time of the movies.
