Tortuga (Spanish: Turtle) is a real-world island off the Northwest Coast of Haiti. A fictionalized depiction of the isle is a prominent location in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Description[]

Tortuga is an island off the northwest coast of Haiti, shaped similarly to the shell of a turtle. During the golden age of piracy, it was a thriving haven for pirates.

Features[]

  • Tortuga Tavern: Formerly known as the Lucky Bride Tavern, this was a pirates tavern established in 1673 and run in the 18th century by Arabella Smith.

Background[]

Tortuga was a port which was frequented by many pirates, buccaneers and smugglers throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Notable pirates to have frequented the port include Captain Jack Sparrow and Blackbeard.

Development history[]

In real-world history, Tortuga was a port which was home to many buccaneers in the 17th century, but turned anti-pirate by the time of the golden age of piracy. A fictionalized version of the island was featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), as a still active pirate port, along with having tableaus inspired by the ride.

A board of flights connected to Disney Springs mentions a delayed arrival from Tortuga. The flight number is, "PTC-100", a reference to Pirates of the Caribbean.[1]

Tortuga Tavern[]

This Adventureland restaurant is themed to being a tavern in Tortuga run by Arabella Smith.
