TRON-JA-307020 or simply Tron is the titular deuteragonist of the 1982 film Tron, and is a supporting antagonist in its sequel TRON: Legacy (2010) where he is known as Rinzler.

History[]

Background[]

Origins[]

TRON-JA-307020 was a self-monitoring computer program designed by ENCOM programmer Dr. Alan Bradley. Due to TRON's security procedures for the users, he was imprisoned by ENCOM's villainous Master Control Program in 1982. Bradley sent in coder ally Kevin Flynn for assistance, only for the MCP to digitize him and bring him into the Grid. Here, Tron and Flynn became allies and escaped together.

With the help of Tron's digitizing supervisor program lover Yori, they were able to defeat the Master Control Program. Following this, Flynn and Tron remained friends and allies with Flynn naming an arcade-game in his honour. When Flynn attempted to create a perfect Grid, Tron was one of his closest allies along with CLU 2.

Rinzler[]

In 1989, CLU 2 rebelled to take over the new Grid for himself. TRON went undercover as, "Rinzler" to defeat CLU-2, only for CLU to find out and reprogram Tron to be his villainous henchman Rinzler, for good. As Rinzler, he acted as an assassin and brutal gladiator, being one of the past victors of the Tron Lightycles Power Run.

In 2010, CLU had Tron fight Kevin's son Sam, though he eventually regained his free will, announcing that he fought for the users before sacrificing himself to sabotage CLU.

Lightcycle Power Run[]

By the 2020s, Sam Flynn opened up an upload conduit connecting the Grid to Tomorrowland. By this time, Rinzler was seemingly active again as a racer for the Lightycles Power Run's Team Orange.

Appearances[]

Due to being the film's titular character, Tron has been mentioned in the names of TRON themed attractions such as the PeopleMover through the World of Tron, or ElecTRONica.
