Captain William Kidd (c. 1645 – May 23, 1701) is a historic privateer who was famously executed for alleged piracy. He is the most cited origin of the "Buried Pirate Treasure" myth and is affiliated with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

History[]

Background[]

Captain William Kidd was a 17th century sailor, believed to have been a pirate and whom was executed for piracy.

Development history[]

Captain Kidd was once planned to be one of the historic pirates featured in the wax museum attraction which evolved into Pirates of the Caribbean. A character found in Marc Davis' concept-art for the attraction was named Captain Robert Kidd, seemingly after the historic sailor.

Appearances[]

Barbossa's Bounty[]

In Barbossa's restaurant, there is a portrait depicting William Kidd with a rifle mounted overtop; seemingly implying it to have belonged to Kidd. The artwork does not accurately portray the historic William Kidd, instead having been created by Howard Pyle in 1921.[1]

Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island[]

At the bottom of the explorers map is a raft with a sign which says, "Cap'n Kidd".

Pirates of the Caribbean[]

The classic Disneyland poster for Pirates of the Caribbean depicts a pirate captain nearby a chest labelled, "W.K." with a Jolly Roger design and circle over the W. This design is lifted from artwork of a fictionalized William Kidd created by Howard Pyle in 1921. Boat #32 used in the Disneyland ride is named, "Cap. Kidd".
